snippet: The Historic Wet Prairie coverage was extracted from the larger historic vegetation mapping to quantify the historic extent and location of wet prairie at the time of survey. Only 2% of this wetland type is estimated to remain from the original extent. In most cases, wet prairie vegetation present at the time of survey is a close approximation of vegetation prior to widespread changes brought by Euro-american settlement.

It is based on land survey data recorded by General Land Office (GLO) surveyors between 1851 and 1910, including township and section line data. Areas described in the original GLO survey descriptions as 'prairie', were classified as 'wet prairie' base on present day NRCS hydric soil mapping. </SPAN></P></DIV>
