Service Description: This Threat-Based Ecostate map (Version 4) provides a spatial depiction of rangeland condition over a 3-year average across all rangelands throughout the sagebrush biome of the western United States. The map is based on the principles of Threat-Based Land Management (Johnson et al 2019; see https://sageshare.org/) as a framework to identify and address the primary threats to sagebrush ecosystems of the northern Great Basin. Rangeland condition is described by ecological states (ecostates) that express current upland vegetation composition and level of threat from wildfire, invasive annual grasses, and juniper encroachment based on the cover of key rangeland functional groups and the severity of threats present. Ecostates are determined based on a rolling three-year average of percent cover of annual forbs & grasses (AFG), perennial forbs & grasses (PFG), shrubs, and trees from the Rangeland Analysis Platform vegetation cover products, version 3 (https://rangelands.app/; Allred et al 2021). The rule set used to define each ecostate is provided in the attribute table. This raster covers all rangelands throughout the sagebrush biome. Non-rangeland pixels, including agriculture, barren areas and urban areas are excluded. Pixels are 30m x 30m and projected usinb WGS 1984.

Subject: This Threat-Based Ecostate map (Version 4) provides a spatial depiction of rangeland condition from 1989-1991 across all rangelands throughout the sagebrush biome of the western United States and uses the principles of Threat-Based Land Management (Johnson et al 2019; see https://sageshare.org/) to identify the primary threats to sagebrush ecosystems of the northern Great Basin. Rangeland condition is described by ecological states (ecostates) that express current upland vegetation composition and level of threat from wildfire, invasive annual grasses, and juniper encroachment based on the cover of key rangeland functional groups and the severity of threats present.
